Saint Edward Brotherhood Exhibition

The new exhibition was opened on the Orthodox Easter Day, 27th April, 2008, after the usual Agape Vespers service in the church. The Opening was attended by Mrs Sarah Goad, the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey, and her husband, Timothy, by Cllr Peter Ankers, the Deputy Mayor of Woking, and his wife Gill, and our County Councillor Mrs Elizabeth Compton.

This small exhibition gives visitors to the Brotherhood an outline of the history of the Brookwood Cemetery, the London Necropolis Railway, our own reception of the sacred Relics of St Edward the Martyr, and the establishment of our monastic brotherhood here. A DVD, which may been viewed in the exhibition, shows visitors something of the daily life of the monks.

Exhibits on display include parts of the original Necropolis railway track, a replica engine and carriage, hand-made candles and tools used in the monastery bindery.

Various structural modifications were made to the Old Mortuary Chapel in order to accomodate the new exhibition area. The former library was enlarged and transformed with the invaluable aid of John Clarke, the historian of the cemetery, and of Mike Stonelake, the designer and illustrator,

The Exhibition is open every Saturday from 11.am. to 5 p.m, on Sundays from 2.30 p.m. to 5 p.m, and during the Heritage Open Days as advertised. At other times, during reasonable daylight hours, we will welcome visitors by appointment.
