PLANNING APPLICATION MADE

OUR ARCHITECT, Irina Hoble-Aldersley of Eulinea Ltd, Worcester Park, Surrey, has now submitted a planning application with regard to the re-roofing of saint Edward’s Church, and this has been validated.  We understand that we can expect a decision just before our Orthodox Christmas.  The fund, donations received and pledged gifts now totals £700,364.54.  Our thanks to all who are supporting us in this.

CROSS RE-ERECTED

THE CROSS, which the late Metropolitan Lavr blessed when he dedicated the site of the New House at Brookwood on 16th /29th May, 2005, naturally had to be removed during building operations.  We have now built a little “golgotha,” restored the Cross and fixed it permanently between the Old Mortuary and New House, so that it is visible immediately one enters the monastic property.

VISITOR

PROTOPRESBYTER-STAVROPHORE Nicola Kotur of the Serbian Orthodox Church in Bedford visited the church while attending the Serbian Orthodox Cemetery here on 28th October.

TREE SURGERY

SURREY COUNTY COUNCIL alerted us to the danger of some of our trees leaning across the Guildford-Bagshot Road, the A322, and required us to have one felled immediately.  We then took advice from the Arboricultural/Tree Officer at Woking Borough Council, James Veats,  regarding the whole problem.  On his advice, at the end of November ten trees were cut down, most because of the danger of their falling across the road, but one, the only large one, because it was diseased and dying.  Four more had branches trimmed back.  As required by the Council, we are now in the process of planting replacement trees.  The work was done swiftly, efficiently and on schedule (a wonder in these days!) by Graham and Hannah Kenward of South East Tree Surgeons Ltd, of Beare Green, Dorking.  Not only was their service excellent, but theirs was the cheapest estimate submitted.  In order to minimalise costs, we did not require them to clear up, as members of the brotherhood can in time do that themselves, saving the Charity money, but we did not feel competent to fell trees right alongside a main road.

CHRISTMAS ARRANGEMENTS

THIS YEAR, the Parish Breakfast after the Christmas Day Liturgy will be held in the larger Memorial Hall in Brookwood Village, because we cannot hope to accommodate everyone in the Brotherhood main hall.  Hitherto, we have held it at the hall in Pirbright but this year this was not available, and there is an advantage in using the one at Brookwood: for those of you who come by train it is within easy walking distance of the station.  We will supply sketch maps at the time to direct you there, and we ask those of you with cars to help taxi people from the church to the hall.  We are sure that offers to bring foods for the celebration at Brookwood Memorial Hall will be greatly appreciated; if you are able to do so, please contact Elena Holden or the Brotherhood.

Because of the shortage of clergy, this year we will have the Christmas Eve Liturgy (Tuesday 6th January n.s.) at the Convent, as well as that on the second day of the feast, the Synaxis of the Mother of God (Thursday 8th January n.s.).

On Christmas Day itself, Wednesday 7th January n.s., the Liturgy will be at Saint Edward’s and, unfortunately, there will not be a Liturgy at the Convent on that day.  However, we cordially invite the Convent parishioners to join us at Brookwood, both for the church services and for the feast afterwards.  The sisters at the Convent will be having a Party Celebration after the Liturgy on the Thursday.
