FUNERAL AT BROOKWOOD
VALENTINA WARD, one of the oldest members of the congregation at the old Russian Orthodox Cathedral at Emperor’s Gate, who sang for many years in the choir there, reposed in the Lord early in October. A few days before her death, she was visited at home by Frs Alexis and Sabbas and anointed with the Holy Unction. Her funeral service was chanted at St Edward’s Church, Brookwood, on Friday 10th October, and, after the mourners had been offered light refreshments in the Brotherhood house, she was accompanied to London and laid to rest in her family grave at Gunnersbury Cemetery. Unusually in these days, but very beautifully, Valentina died at home surrounded by her extensive family: children, grand-children and in-laws. For her it must have been a blessing in itself to end her time amidst such love.
Presbytera Helen Cherney, the widow of Protopresbyter Alexander of the Latvian Orthodox community in London, died on Sunday, 12th October. She had been a friend of our community since its inception. Her funeral was served at the Russian Orthodox Cathedral at Ennismore Gardens, after which she too was laid to rest in Gunnersbury Cemetery, with her husband and son.
May the Lord grant Memory Eternal to the departed handmaidens of God, Presbytera Helen and Valentina and may their rest be with the Saints!
