VISITORS
AMONG the visitors that we have been blessed to receive this month, we had Fr Deacon Michael Alexander, Fr Alexander Fostiropoulos and Fr Samir Gholam. Fr Michael and his family were baptized at Saint Edward’s, but for many years have been living in Yorkshire. Recently he was ordained to the diaconate by His Eminence Metropolitan Kallistos of Diokleia to serve the Antiochian Community of St Constantine in York, under the pastorate of Fr Elwin Richards. Fr Michael arrived a day later than expected and stayed with us for three days.
Fr Alexander (ER) visited us on 16th July to bless the headstone on the grave of Terence Perrin in our cemetery. He came in for coffee, but Fr Alexis was away at the time. However the two met by chance later, and had a long chat about pastoral matters by the Duck Pond in Pirbright when Fr Alexis had returned and went out to post.
Fr Samir (AP) and his Preotasa Petronella, visited on 25th July to serve a memorial service at the grave of Preotasa’s aunt, Elena Popescu, and as usual they kindly brought us a hamper of provisions.
We also had a visit by seven members of the Central London Cycling Club on 13th July, who wished to see the church, and three days later Brother Joseph, a traditionalist Roman Catholic monk from France, brought three young French students with him to see the church. Guy Lawrence, who accompanied them, acted as interpretor, and it was the first time the Frenchmen had visited an Orthodox church.
BISHOP AMBROSE’S AUTUMN VISIT
HIS GRACE, Bishop Ambrose of Methoni has now confirmed that he will be visiting England for the Autumn Feast of Saint Edward the Martyr. He will arrive in this country on Friday 12th September n.s., and the next day, the feast of the Cincture of the Mother of God, he will celebrate the Divine Liturgy at the St Boniface Mission in Ryde, Isle of Wight - their first hierarchal service. For the Sunday, which is also the Church New Year, he will celebrate with Mother Vikentia and her sisters at the Convent of the Annunciation in Willesden. On the Monday evening and the Tuesday morning (15th & 16th September), he will celebrate the Vigil Service and the Divine Liturgy at Saint Edward’s Church on the festival of our heavenly patron.
RE-SUBSCRIPTION
WITH THIS ISSUE, we are sending out re-subscription forms and we ask you to return them, whether or not you still wish to receive the magazine and whether or not you are sending a contribution. May we also ask those of you who now read the magazine on our website, <www.saintedwardbrotherhood.org>, also to help us by sending a donation. You are after all picking up crumbs even from this rather sparse table! We can receive contributions in Stirling and in US dollars. Please make cheques payable to “Saint Edward Brotherhood.” And, please, do not invent different names for our account!
PRACTICAL TIP
THIS is something very basic and would not have been necessary to mention to Orthodox Christians of an older generation, but one should have an icon in each of the principal rooms in your home, so that wherever you are you are reminded that you are in the presence of God and His Saints. Thus, to in any and every trial, you can turn to the icon and pray.
