The Shepherd, June 2008
EACH MONTH we thank our readers for the gifts that they have given us in the Calendar insert. This month we have several things which we think deserve special mention. Giovanni Motta, a correspondent from Milan, sent us copies of a painting by Carraci, “Cardinal Edward Farnese kneeling before Christ, King Edward the Martyr, King [sic] Ermenegild (of Spain) and Saint Agnes” (oil on canvas, ca. 1570).” It is extremely rare for St Edward to be depicted on the continent and in the Renaissance period, but we presume that St Edward the Martyr was the Cardinal’s name saint. Maria of Goldsworth Park and her family made an offering of a Phanouriopita on the Sunday of the Samaritan Woman, and Michael and Margaret Woodrow brought koliva and provided a mercy meal for Antonina Vladimirovna Ananina on the day of her year’s mind, 15th / 28th May.
BISHOP AMBROSE’S AUTUMN VISIT
HIS GRACE, Bishop Ambrose of Methoni has now confirmed that he will be visiting England for the Autumn Feast of Saint Edward the Martyr. He will arrive in this country on Friday 12th September n.s., and the next day, the feast of the Cincture of the Mother of God, he will celebrate the Divine Liturgy at the St Boniface Mission in Ryde, Isle of Wight - their first hierarchal service. For the Sunday, which is also the Church New Year, he will celebrate with Mother Vikentia and her sisters at the Convent of the Annunciation in Willesden. On the Monday evening and the Tuesday morning (15th & 16th September), he will celebrate the Vigil Service and the Divine Liturgy at Saint Edward’s Church on the festival of our heavenly patron.
THE BUILDING FUND now (31/5/08 n.s.) stands at £673,608.94
PRACTICAL TIP
MOST CONSCIENTIOUS parents bring their children to Holy Communion as often as possible, but sadly many parents, especially those from the former Eastern bloc countries, very rarely partake themselves. Admittedly it is impossible for adults to receive as often as their young children, but do try to join your children as often as possible in receiving the Divine Gifts. You do not want to give the children the impression that it is only something that little children do, to be left off when they are big enough. By your example, show them that it is also something very important to you, and is at the centre of your spiritual life, so that in turn it may become the same for them throughout their lives.
