FUNERAL AT BROOKWOOD

ON BRIGHT TUESDAY,  Archpriest Alexander Fostiropoulos of the Archdiocese of Orthodox Parishes of the Russian Tradition in Western Europe, served the funeral of Galina Feigin, and laid her to rest in our cemetery.  Galina was well-known in the Russian community & was both a translator and a book-binder.  At the time of her interment the sixty or so mourners were joined by Fr Samir Gholam and his Preoteasa Petronilla who had come to tend the grave of Preoteasa’s aunt, so we had an impromptu meeting of clergy of three jurisdictions.  Afterwards, everyone was treated to refreshments in the Old Mortuary hall.

PILGRIMAGE TO ROMANIA

AS PARISHIONERS will know, Fr Alexis is a stick-in-the mud, but at the “urging” of, and with the blessing of, Bishop Ambrose, he will be making a short pilgrimage to the Sacred Monastery at Slatioara for the festival of Saint Glycherie the Confessor.  He will be away from 26th June to 2nd July n.s.  And, at the time of going to press, Fr Stephen Fretwell and Presbytera Joanna will be making a pilgrimage to Greece to visit the Sacred Monastery of Sts Cyprian and Justina, at Fili.

WILCUMA CALENDAR FOR 2010

THE Anglo-Saxon - Englisc Calendar published by Wilcuma for 2010, is fronted by a picture of the ruins of Corfe Castle, the site where St Edward the Martyr was slain.  It contains a “timeline” of St Edward, and the principal pictures for September, November and December are of Saint Edward’s Shrine Church at Brookwood.  In addition on the pages for each of these three months there are three additional small pictures of our Brotherhood.  Visit: <www.wilcuma.org.uk>  The calendar even gives the service schedule for Saint Edward’s.  Our thanks to Stephen Bennett, for his superb efforts in this respect.

PRACTICAL TIP

YOUNG CHILDREN sometimes need a break from the long church services, but be careful that you do not permit them to spend the greater part of the service playing outside so that they receive no training in attending in church and no preparation for receiving Holy Communion.  Be sure also that they do not cause a disturbance outside the church which can be heard and can distract the worshippers inside.  Also share responsibility for looking after the children.  Recently I noticed a bevy of young mothers outside, claiming they were looking after their children, but in fact talking and chatting among themselves.  Take it in turns to look after the children, one or two adults should be quite sufficient for this, and while the service in progress, they should not chat and talk, but try to remain at prayer.  If you are close enough to hear the progress of the service inside, listen to that and follow it; if you cannot then pray quietly, and do not give the children a bad example, allowing them to think that they can disregard the services.
