GARDEN PROGRESS

IN THE LAST MONTH, we have restored the greenhouse, which had broken panes of glass & was rather the worse for wear after several moves, and, this year, being able to start earlier (last year we were still involved with moving), we have been able to devote more time to preparing the garden and have started a seed planting programme.  We are concentrating on vegetable production to try & produce as much of our own food as we possibly can.

NEW SPECIES FOUND AT BROOKWOOD!

“THE BROOKWOOD EXPRESS,” the newsletter of the Brookwood Cemetery Society (No: 75; February 2009), reports that a new species of liverwort has been identified in plot 5 of the Cemetery.  It has been named Lophocolea Brookwoodiana.  It was at first thought that it might have been a species introduced from the Southern Hemisphere, but all attempts to match it with other species of liverwort were unsuccessful.  For the liverwort enthusiasts among you, more information on this remarkable find can be accessed in the Journal of Bryology, volume 28, number 3, September 2006, pages 163-166.  The Brookwood Cemetery Society site is: <http://www.tbcs.org.uk/>  - well worth a visit.

PRACTICAL TIP

COMPLAINING can be helpful on occasion, but do not complain about anything that you are not prepared to help put right.  Also do not complain to all and sundry, otherwise you are simply falling into the sin of spreading disaffection.
